In new footage of the upcoming musical biopic, Rocketman, lead actor Taron Egerton shows off his pipes singing as Elton John. And he sounds good.
Described as an ‘epic musical fantasy’, Rocketman is the story of how ‘shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight’ became the one and only Elton John.
In this new feature, combining both footage from the movie and behind-the-scenes clips, Egerton talks about playing the iconic gay singer.
‘The thing about playing someone who is so beloved, all we can do is give our heartfelt interpretation of his life and his music,’ he muses in the video.
Then we get to hear Egerton’s musical interpretation of John and it’s remarkable.
The film is approved by both John and his husband, David Furnish, and they’re also co-producers on the film.
Giles Martin, the music producer of the movie, adds in the video: ‘Elton said, “I don’t think I’ve heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron.”
‘The great thing about Elton is that he wants Taron’s interpretations of his songs.
The movie also stars Jamie Bell as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin. Also in the cast are Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother.
‘I feel that the movie we’ve shot is absolutely a celebration of everything that Elton John is, and part of that is his sexuality,’ he continued.
Dexter Fletcher, who was brought in to finish Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer’s firing, is directing Rocketman.
The movie is slated for release on 24 May in the UK and 31 May in the US.
