Taron Egerton is going to make a great Elton John and this video proves it

Taron Egerton as Elton John in Rocketman

It’s almost here — the Elton John biopic Rocketman. English actor Taron Egerton stars as the iconic and glamorous singer and this new music video is the best look yet at his portrayal.

Paramount released the video on Wednesday (1 May), showing off both Egerton’s vocals and looks.

In the video, Egerton sings the Elton John single Rocket Man in a studio interspersed with clips from the movie.

It’s no surprise Egerton sounds amazing singing as Elton John with his own talented vocals, given he has John’s personal seal of approval.

Giles Martin, the music producer of the movie, revealed in a previous featurette: ‘Elton said, “I don’t think I’ve heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron.”‘

He also said that John specifically wanted Egerton’s personal interpretation of his songs.

A promising portrayal of one of the greats

In March, Paramount held a screening of select Rocketman footage. I was impressed with what I saw, especially in regards to the movie exploring John’s complete intersections of identities. It does not shy away from his exisistence as a gay man nor the uglier parts of his life such as addiction.

While speaking to Egerton following the screening, he enthusiastically assured me of the film’s representation.

‘That was one of my first notes,’ he said of coming on to the project and knowingly portraying an icon of the LGBTI community.

Of the footage shown, he added: ‘There is so much you didn’t see in that footage, some really beautiful scenes between me and Richard [Madden].’

In the movie, Madden plays John’s former manager and lover, John Reid.

Egerton revealed the gay sex scene with Madden in the film was his first time filming a sex scene. He told GSN he wanted to do ‘justice’ both to John and his identity.

Described as an ‘epic musical fantasy’, Rocketman is the story of how ‘shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight’ became the one and only Elton John.

It arrives in theaters on 24 May in the UK and 31 May in the US.
