Texas oil executive arrested for punching ‘faggot’ unconscious

A Texas oil executive has been arrested for punching unconscious a gay man he called a ‘faggot’ moments before.

Anthony Fera, president of Houston-based MidStar Energy, was charged with misdemeanor assault with injuries for the 18 April attack.

William Smith, 47, and his husband, Paul Von Wupperfield, were walking down a street in Austin at around 10.25pm when Fera, 51, barreled out of a parking lot and almost hit them.

‘You nearly hit us!’ Smith shouted.

To which Fera responded, ‘Fuck you, faggot.’

According to Smith’s police statement, Fera then stopped his truck in the middle of traffic, got out and they exchanged more words before he was punched unconscious.

Von Wupperfeld said Fera then ran to his car and drove off.

He said Smith’s ‘face was swollen and bloody from where he had been punched, with cuts on his nose, right cheek and chin. He was unconscious for around 30-45 seconds.’

A number of witnesses filmed the assault on their phones and called police.

Smith suffered a fractured nose, black eye, lacerations, scrapes and a shoulder injury.

Fera was arrested on 2 June and his bail was set at $5,000.

Police said it would be up to the district attorney’s office to decide whether to add hate crime charges to Fera’s assault charges.
