The Modern Ken is a NYC-based pop-up exhibit taking place today (Saturday, 13 October). A Match Bak Entertainment Production featuring Courtney Charles, the exhibit aims to shatter stereotypes of masculinity.

‘The idea behind this exhibit is to bring awareness to pressing social issues such as homophobia, toxic masculinity, gay adoption and family rights, body positivity, and the #MeToo movement,’ SecretNYC writes of the event.

‘Match Bak Entertainment (the company behind the creation of this event) seeks to do this by featuring a diverse cast of life sized Ken doll models to create an inclusive environment for all. The work you’ll see at the event is largely inspired by photographer Mr. Courtney Charles.’

Christos Bakalexis is the founder of Match Bak Entertainment and Creative Director of The Modern Ken Pop-up.

Ken: A Gay Man’s Icon

Barbie and Ken have inadvertently become LGBTI icons in recent years. From Barbie officially supporting marriage equality to the Ken-esque doll Gay Bob to the Human Ken Doll, it’s clear these plastic toys have influenced LGBTI culture.

The exhibit

The Modern Ken exhibit includes a yoga non-binary Ken, fisting Ken, cheerleader Ken, future Ken, candidate Ken, farmer Ken, and many more.
