This reality TV star is battling to ban online homophobia

TOWIE star Bobby Norries spoke on Loose Women about his battle

British TV show The Only Way Is Essex star Bobby Norris spoke about his battle to change the law and make online homophobia a criminal offence today (16 April).

Appearing on daytime TV talk show Loose Women, the reality TV star revealed why he is trying to get ‘Bobby’s Bill’ passed by Parliament.

Also, the 32-year-old, who has starred on TOWIE since 2010, set up a petition that has since tallied more than 60,000 signatures. He has until August this year to secure the 100,000 necessary for Parliament to debate the bill.

What did he say?

Chatting to Andrea McLean, Coleen Nolan, Janet Street-Porter, and Brenda Edwards on the panel. Norris spoke about how current UK laws cannot accommodate the sheer scale of online homophobia.

‘For me, I have gone through this, what I can only call, vile and disgusting online homophobia.

‘Don’t get me wrong, I love social media but it has got so big now, you can’t put that genie back in the bottle.

‘The laws which were in place five or ten years ago, the internet is a very different world.’

‘It shouldn’t be acceptable to throw that much hate’

Furthermore, Bobby added: ‘I don’t think it’s any coincidence that mental health is on the rise.

‘I am no psychologist but there has to be on a knock on effect.

‘When I was at school, if you got bullied, it was at school. Now they wake up and they see it, they go to bed and they see it, it’s 24/7. It shouldn’t be acceptable to throw that much hate.’

Though he clarified that the online trolling is ‘minor’ he admitted he ‘couldn’t even say’ what trolls say to him ‘on daytime television. I wouldn’t want to offend anyone.’

Moreover, addressing the trolls, he said: ‘If you don’t like me, don’t like me. My sexuality; I can’t change anything to do with that I am afraid.

‘I am not going to wake up straight tomorrow.’
