Tinder has teamed up with GLAAD to launch a feature allowing users to select up to three different sexual orientations.
The popular dating app is rolling out an update formally introducing Orientation. The new feature will also let users prioritize potential matches according to their orientation preferences.
How does it work?
The update is in response to user feedback, as well as a study conducted by the app. A survey found that increased normalization of different sexual orientations has made it easier for members of the LGBTI community to be open and honest about their dating lives.
To add their sexual orientation users will need to go to Edit Info within the app. After tapping Orientation, they’ll be able to select up to three terms to describe their sexual orientation.
From there, users can also select whether to display their sexual orientation on their profile.
Moreover, users can select to see users of their same sexual orientation first within their Discovery Preferences.
Tinder and GLAAD
‘We want all of our users to feel empowered expressing who they are while connecting with new people – and we’re always working to make that easier for our users on Tinder,’ said CEO of Tinder Elie Seidman.
‘Dating apps are invaluable platforms for connecting the LGBTI community, and we’re beyond proud to continue our efforts, in partnership with GLAAD, to improve the community’s experience on Tinder.’
‘Tinder continues to show a dedication to inclusivity with updates that reach millions of people and create safer spaces for LGBTI users,’ said Rich Ferraro, Chief Communications Officer at GLAAD.
‘Their latest work to expand additional sexual orientation options is an impactful change that helps LGBTI people authentically express their full selves and gives LGBTI users more control over potential matches.’
At the end of 2018, Tinder had introduced More Genders, which was also built in collaboration with GLAAD. The feature allowing users to select their gender orientation has led to more than 80 million new matches among users.
Munroe Bergdorf opens up on using Tinder as a trans woman
Tinder is also working with trans rights activist and model Munroe Bergdorf.
‘As a trans woman, dating is something that hasn’t always been easy, especially being pansexual. However, dating apps have really helped me on this journey,’ she said in a statement.
‘Tinder has been a place of acceptance and the new development that allows me to add my sexual orientation – and choose to see others who identify in the same way before anyone else – is a huge step in the right direction for the LGBTI community.’
She furthermore said: ‘When using dating apps, it’s so important to be able to pick who you want to be matched with based on your preferences and identity, so I’m excited to get swiping.’
