Tom Daley’s quest for a second medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio got off to a spectacular start on Friday (19 August).

The British diving star qualified for the 10m platform semifinals as the highest scorer in the event’s preliminary competition.

Daley, 22, scored a personal best of 571.85. Finishing behind him with a score of 564.75 was China’s Qiu Bo. Bo was the silver medalist in 2012 at the Olympics in London where Daley took the bronze in the event.

Daley is going for his second medal at these Olympics after winning bronze with partner Daniel Goodfellow in the synchronized 10m platform last week.

The semifinals of the 10m platform will take place on Saturday (20 August).
