One of the top African Cardinals in the Vatican hierarchy has declared homosexuality and Islamic extremism to be the 21st Century’s equivalent of Communism and Nazism in a firey address to Pope Francis’ Synod on the Family.
Cardinal Robert Sarah, who is a prelate in the Catholic Church and the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, said Western secularism and Islamic extremism were like ‘two apocalyptic beasts’ stalking the world and that ‘we find ourselves between gender ideology and ISIS.’
Cardinal Sarah complained that massacres by Muslim extremists and same-sex marriage ‘regularly contend for the front pages of the newspapers.’
‘From these two radicalizations arise the two major threats to the family: its subjectivist disintegration in the secularized West through quick and easy divorce, abortion, homosexual unions, euthanasia etc.’
‘On the other hand is the pseudo-family of ideologized Islam which legitimizes polygamy, female subservience, sexual slavery, child marriage.’
Cardinal Sarah warned these two forces both had a ‘demonic origin’ and spread spiritual confusion by demanding a universal and totalitarian rule.
‘We are not contending against creatures of flesh and blood,’ he said, calling Islamic fundamentalists and secularists, ‘violently intolerant, destroyers of families, society and the Church, and … openly Christianophobic.’
‘We need to be inclusive and welcoming to all that is human; but what comes from the Enemy cannot and must not be assimilated. You cannot join Christ and Belial. What Nazi-Fascism and Communism were in the 20th century, Western homosexual and abortion Ideologies and Islamic Fanaticism are today.’
Conservatives within the Vatican have warned that they feel liberals have had too much influence in drafting the position statements the Synod on the Family is considering and they fear the result will be a more lenient and accepting direction towards LGBTI people and divorced people within the Catholic Church.
