Marvel could be set to have a gay superhero in its films.
Production chief Victoria Alonso has said LGBTI representation is the next box they want to tick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.
‘The world is ready, the world is ready,’ she also told Variety.
Marvel set to have a gay actor play a gay character
Rumors have swirled that Marvel is set to make the upcoming film, The Eternals, with a gay lead.
Alonso did not confirm the rumor at the Los Angeles premiere of Captain Marvel.
She said: ‘We are going to cast the best ‘Eternals’ cast that we can and when we’re ready to announce it we promise you we will.’
Alonso also emphasized how committed Marvel is to diversity.
‘Why wouldn’t we be? Why wouldn’t we be?’ Alonso said.
‘I’m so passionate about this I’ve got to tell you. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different.
‘Why wouldn’t we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person?
‘Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive.’
‘Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail.
‘If we also don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success.
‘Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.’
If Eternals does have a gay lead, this would be the first in its 21-film history.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in 2015 that he predicted that LGBTI characters would appear in an Avengers movie within the next decade.
Many critics blame the lack of LGBTI representation in mainstream blockbusters on China.
As the second largest box office behind the United States, producers will do anything to ensure films are not censored or banned in such a big market.
