Torchwood is returning for a fifth season, but this one comes in a new format.
And the producers are already teasing the return of the gay romance between omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness and his office boy Ianto Jones, who died at the end of season three.
The duo famously hit it off after Jones’ girlfriend-turned-mad-cyborg was discovered hidden away in Torchwood’s basement. The men’s romance quickly became a fan favorite, especially as season two showed them to be more than just friends with benefits.
Season five will be called Torchwood: Aliens Among Us, the Big Finish-produced series will be made up of audio plays rather than on-screen episodes.
‘This is an ambitious series for Big Finish – an entire season of Torchwood! There are some great scripts by some new writers, ‘ said James Goss, who will be producing this series.
‘But there are also some familiar old faces – of course Rhys and Andy are in it, but there’ll be a few other surprises, including an appearance by someone who just has to be, has to be dead… .’
The Doctor Who spin-off’s last season, called Torchwood: Mircale Day, hit screens in the US and the UK six years ago.
Torchwood: Aliens Among Us will feature not just former Time Agent Captain Jack, but also see other familiar faces return.
Gwen Cooper – the last surviving member of his original team – will feature, and so will her husband Rhys, and police officer Andy who became a major character as earlier seasons progressed.
And like the first three seasons, Aliens Among Us will once again be set in Cardiff.
Russell T. Davies, who originally created the show, is overseeing season five’s production.
For the new episodes, the old team will be joined by Mr Colchester (Paul Clayton), Ng (Alexandria Riley), Tyler (Jonny Green) and the enigmatic Orr (Sam Béart).
Their mission, Big Finish teases, is to save Cardiff from ‘an invasion that’s already been lost’.
The season will be released in three box sets – one in August, one in October, and the last one in February next year.
