Trailblazers: Trent Owers and Luke Shayler – ‘Pride in Gran Can as a married couple? Not really our jam…’

Trent and Luke will be heading to California later this year

What’s been your most romantic trip?
Trent: We hired out a really nice penthouse in Brighton for a weekend of fun and activities, but it ended up raining the entire time. So we just stayed inside, watched movies on the big screen, cuddled and ate! That’s our ideal romantic trip!

Where’s been your worst holiday and why?
Luke: We haven’t exactly had a holiday from hell, but if we had to choose, we did go to Maspalomos Gay Pride in Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands. Honestly, it’s probably fun for a single gay guy, but for a married couple, partying for two weeks straight wasn’t really our jam…

Have you ever experienced homophobia or discrimination abroad?
Luke: We haven’t no, and hopefully never will.

Would you avoid a certain country because of the laws there?
Trent: Yes! We hate being anywhere where we feel uncomfortable or can’t be ourselves with each other. The obvious ones for us are Russia, the Middle East and most parts of Africa.

Do you prefer to travel solo or with a partner?
Luke: Definitely with a partner! It’s a lot more fun and having a travel buddy to keep you company is the best thing.

What is your favorite thing about your home city?
Luke: I’ve lived in London all my life so I just see it as home. I love the opportunities that can arise from living here.
Trent: As I live here now, I consider London to be one of my home cities. I like the fashion here and all the markets and shops. You can dress any way and be who you want and no one bats an eyelid. As for my other home on the Gold Coast – I took advantage of it when I lived there. I like how chilled out it is, the fresh food and the fact you can wake up every morning and just walk to the beach!

Where’s been your best holiday and why?
Trent: Australia! I took Luke to meet my family there and he loved it. They pulled out all the stops for him. We went in a hot air balloon over the Gold Coast, had our wedding anniversary in Sydney, climbed the Q1 skyscraper and lapped up all the sun! We had a blast. We’re actually planning to move there in a few years time.

Where were you going the last time you stepped on a plane?
Trent: Australia, to visit my family for Christmas.

Where do you hope to go on holiday this year and why?
Luke: We are actually getting flown out to the US in July for a new YouTube convention called Pride Con which we are guests at! We have both never been to America and it’s the top spot we have wanted to go to for a while! So very excited!

What is your dream destination and why?
Trent: Oh, we pretty much just answered that in the last question! We would be happy with anywhere is the US. I think we would love New York and Florida the most from what I’ve heard!

Where did you typically go on holiday as a kid?
Trent: My parents are massive travelers but not the biggest fans of flying. We would travel around the Australian coast visiting small beach towns. It was a lot of fun.
Luke: Cornwall, down on the seaside in the UK. The whole extended family would come for a week.

Trent and Luke will be guests at Pride Con’s summer convention, called Be Proud, a two-day convention scheduled for 29-30 July through 2016, at the Hilton Anaheim in Anaheim, California.
