In the new documentary, The Last Five Years, filmmaker Francis Whately showcases the final years of singer David Bowie’s life.

HBO released the first trailer for the new documentary and it’s all at once bittersweet, fascinating, and a little dark — much like the androgynous icon himself.

The movie hones in on Bowie’s last two albums, The Next Day and Blackstar. He was initially diagnosed with cancer midway through 2014, but that didn’t stop his creative ambitions.

Friends, collaborators, and more discuss those last five years and how his final albums came about.

Consisting of interviews, archival footage, and more, there’s an eerie and melancholy feeling throughout.

As Bowie says near the end of the trailer: ‘Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about at the right place to do something exciting.’

The documentary arrives on HBO on 8 January, what would have been his 71st birthday.
