Trans activist Janet Mock demands action on transgender protections in schools

Janet Mock

Bestselling author Janet Mock launches new campaign demanding action on transgender protections in schools.

Partnering with the Ally Coalition and Care2, the #DearBetsyDevos campaign enables signers to send postcards to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

An automatic postcard is generated after signers fill in their details and why it’s important to them.

The postcards will then be printed out and sent to Secretary of Education DeVos.

Janet Mock said: ‘Young people overwhelmingly get it.

‘It’s adults like those in the Trump administration who don’t realize that pitting young people against one another has consequences.

‘It encourages some to be bullies and turns others into sinister objects,’ Mock said.

‘Transgender people are not second-class citizens’

The campaign states 78% of trans and gender nonconforming students experience harassment at school.

It also says nearly half of transgender students have suicidal thoughts.

Co-Founder of The Ally Coalition, Jack Antonoff said: ‘Trans students deserve so much better.

‘If the administration won’t act – then we all need to speak out,’ he said.

Mock also said: ‘When our leaders fail us and our children, it is our job to have their backs and ensure they are protected, supported and affirmed.’

Within 24 hours, the petition had over 5,000 signatures and at the time of writing, over 21,000 signatures.
