Trans man Yuval Topper gives birth

A transgender man has given birth to a healthy baby boy, becoming the first in Israel to do so.

Yuval Topper underwent an operation to change from female to male three years ago but kept his female reproductive system largely intact.

Topper’s contractions began while he and his partner were traveling to Hadassah Medical centre in Jerusalem from their home in Tel Aviv. Due to heavy traffic they decided to stop en route and head to Sheba Medical Centre in Ramat Gan, Greater Tel Aviv, on the evening of 27 December.

The 24-year-old said to Mako Pride Channel: ‘Even though we preferred Hadassah, a hospital where we were treated in an excellent manner, we were forced to evacuate to Sheba due to the speed of contraction and heavy traffic. The hospital staff treated us with respect and consideration.’

Topper, who was born female to a religious family said in his interview: ‘The embryo is male, but only he can define his gender, when the time comes. Even though for us it is not necessarily means he would dress in blue and play with trucks.’

He also spoke of his journey: ‘I had a few coming outs, the first when I was 14, as a lesbian. When I was 16, I understood I am transgender, and after I underwent my treatment, I started to be attracted to guys, and since then I am gay.’

According to Topper his religious family, who is based in Jerusalem and is of British origin, is very supportive and happy with their new family member.

Topper is a volunteer in a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth organisation that helps adolescents deal with issues of sexuality, he is also very involved in the Israeli LGBT community.

Topper is not the first transgender man to have given birth in history. Most famously Thomas Beatie did so in America.
