Transgender model Jenna Talackova has been named a ‘Fierce Competitor’ for her upcoming feature in fashion magazine Elle Canada.
The now 25-year-old made international headlines in 2012 when she was disqualified from the Miss Universe beauty pageant because she was not born a woman.
After lobbying to change eligibility rules, Talackova was welcomed back to compete, and while she was not crowned, the model has certainly come out winning.
She will be featured in the January 2014 issue of Elle Canada, and on 19 January will premiere in reality series Brave New Girl, which will follow her journey in modeling.
In an April 2012 interview with Barbara Walters after the Miss Universe competition, she said she was coming into her own as an advocate for LGBTI rights.
‘I feel like the universe, the creator just put me in this position as an advocate.
‘And now it’s like this, and I’ll take that position. If it’s helping anybody else, my story and my actions, then I feel great about it.’
She told Elle for her upcoming feature: ‘You know, you need to be real with yourself, and you need to realize that it’s not a mistake.
‘You have an amazing life to live—live it the way you want to.’
