‘Trans people deserve to live’: Activists unfurl huge banner at World Series

Trans supporters attending the World Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles unfurled a massive banner on Sunday (28 October) night.

A huge transgender flag with the words ‘TRANS PEOPLE DESERVE TO LIVE’  printed on it was on show as the Los Angeles Dodgers took on the Boston Red Sox in the baseball World Series.

The TransLatina Coalition uploaded a Facebook video of two activists unfurling the banner.  The Los Angeles Blade named them as Bamby Salcedo and Maria Roman.

According to the Facebook video, security quickly descended on the activists. One was detained, but not arrested. The pair left without further incident.

‘Our message tonight was to let the world know that we as Trans people deserved to be humanized, acknowledged and valued’, said Salcedo, according to the Blade.

‘We won’t be erased’

The protest comes as transgender Americans face unprecedented attacks from the Trump administration.

Earlier this month, a leaked memo suggested US President Donald Trump planned to legally erase transgender people by restricting the definition of sex to genitalia at birth.

‘The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence,’ it read.

Trans rights advocates and supporters have taken ‘won’t be erased’ as their rallying call. There has been a number of large-scale protests.

Trump defended his policy by saying ‘ I’m protecting everybody. I want to protect our country’.

Furthermore, the Department of Justice last week said US businesses had the right to discriminate against transgender workers.

In a brief sent on Wednesday (24 October), Solicitor General Noel Francisco said that a civil rights law banning sex discrimination in the workplace doesn’t apply to transgender bias.

Advocates, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) promised to fight back.

The Boston Red Sox went on to win the World Series on Sunday night.
