A trans woman is fighting for her life after being shot in Pakistan.
Police at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar have said the victim, who we will not name, was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound on Tuesday night.
It appears it was a random attack motivated by hatred.
The hospital failed to provide immediate treatment, according to the group Trans Action Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The group claim doctors allegedly refused to help the victim for three hours as they believed ‘patients would be uncomfortable of a transgender person’ being treated at the same time as them.
Eventually, as they were facing protests from the group, the doctors allegedly relented and chose to put the victim in a male ward with curtain stands around her. The bullet was removed and the victim is now recovering. She lost a large amount of blood.
A Trans Action Khyber Pakhtunkha spokesperson said: ‘I have no words to share the hate and discrimination we faced in hospital today.’
A representative for Lady Reading Hospital was not available for comment.
