A trans woman who was shot six times died of her injuries on Sunday in Pakistan.

The woman identified by police as Spogmai, was allegedly targeted by a group of unknown men at her apartment in the city Peshawar.

‘A transgender was shot and shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in a critical condition,’ an officer from Gulberg local police told media.

The woman was taken to the hospital in a critical condition and then moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for treatment.

‘After receiving her, doctors shifted the injured to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and provided treatment,” Asim Khan said, adding that the victim succumbed to her injuries in the ICU,’ an LRH spokesperson told media.

Her body was then moved to Khyber Medical College for a post-mortem examination.

Friends of the dead woman descended on the hospital demanded justice and called for the alleged assailants to be arrested.

Local police said it was still trying to determine the number of assailants and their identities.

Peshawar violence

Trans women in Peshawar face ongoing violence.

Just last month, the Khyber Medical College refused to take the body of tortured and beheaded trans woman. The morgue’s management said her body would ‘make the freezers dirty’.

Trans women have also faced difficulty in accessing medical care after they have been the victims of violence. Prominent trans activist, Alesha, was shot eight times in 2016 and died of her injuries because she could not get adequate medical treatment.

Earlier in 2016 another trans woman who was shot was refused treatment for three hours at the LRH. Doctors claimed ‘patients would be uncomfortable of a transgender person’ being treated at the same time as them.

Since 2015 more than 50 trans women have been murdered in Pakistan.
