Diversity is on the agenda of this year’s Channel 4 Alternative Christmas Message in Britain which features My Transsexual Summer star Karen Gayle.
The 52-year-old former police officer will be featured as part of the ‘just be yourself’ theme and will appear alongside other television personalities.
Gayle’s story of gender reassignment, dating, and coming to terms with her new identity was showcased in the ground-breaking four part documentary show.
The New Year is going to be an important time for Gayle as it will be the first year since her gender reassignment surgery.
She said: ‘Spare a thought for those trying to find their own feet this Christmas.’
This will be the first year that Channel four has broadcast two Alternative Christmas Messages, with one to be shown in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
One will be a ‘plea for tolerance’ and will also feature Max Laird from Seven Dwarves and Beauty and the Beast contributor Susan Campbell-Duncan who was facially disfigured after cancer treatment.
Acid attack survivor Katie Piper also will appear for the second time in the history of the broadcast.
The second message will feature Vic Goddard who was head of a comprehensive school featured in the show Educating Essex.
A Channel four spokesperson said: ‘After a year of popular, touching and powerful factual series, Channel 4 decided to double the festivities by broadcasting two Alternative Christmas Messages and offering viewers the chance to hear from a wide range of contributors who moved and inspired audiences over the past year.’
Channel 4 has broadcast their alternative message every year since 1993. The first programme was delivered by the legendary gay author Quentin Crisp.
