A troll has paid Twitter to promote a tweet urging transgender people to kill themselves.
The troll, impersonating Australian feminist Caitlin Roper, used Twitter’s paid-for native advertising service so the tweets would show up in the feeds of users who did not follow them.
‘Trannies, your families will never love you. You are living a lie & you know it. End your miserable existence. Commit suicide now,’ read one of the tweets.
‘Trannies are living a delusion. You can help them escape their delusions by beating them senseless. Go out & start beating trannies now,’ read another.
‘Trannies, you will never be the opposite gender. You are living a delusion. Get a rope & hang yourself. You know you want to. End it all now,’ said a third.
The promoted tweets appeared on the feeds of users who reacted angrily at the author and Twitter for promoting the tweet.
The account was suspended within hours of multiple reports of abuse and the tweets were deleted.
‘As soon as we were made aware we removed the ad and suspended the account,’ a Twitter spokesperson told the Guardian.
Roper took to her real Twitter account to clarify that is was not her posting the tweets.
‘Hi friends, someone has created a Twitter account impersonating me and tweeting hateful comments. Account suspended, thanks for your help x,’ she wrote.
