Trump administration allegedly now trying to erase trans people at the United Nations

Trans Solidarity Rally and March, Washington 2015

The Trump administration is allegedly trying to erase gender from human rights documents at the United Nations.

This update on Donald Trump’s government continued attack on the transgender community comes from an exclusive report in the Guardian.

According to their writing, Trump officials within the UN are attempting to remove the word ‘gender’ from these documents. In most cases, they want to replace it with ‘woman’.

Most of these changes are taking place at the UN’s Third Committee. This group addresses matters of ‘social, humanitarian and cultural’ rights.

The Guardian provided one example of a document introduced by Germany and the Philippines about the trafficking of women and girls.

In this document, the US reportedly wants to remove phrases like ‘gender-based violence’ and replace it with ‘violence against women’.

According to the Guardian, the Trump administration and its diplomats want to remove language that is ‘vague and politically correct’. They went to rid UN documents of ideology and ‘treating gender as an individual choice rather than an unchangeable biological fact’.

One UN diplomat said: ‘If you only say violence against women, it doesn’t really tell the whole story.’

They also added they’d be willing to go to bad for this issue.

‘We shouldn’t be going along with encouraging their society to be regressive. And if that means a blazing row in the Third Committee, I would have a blazing row in committee because I think some things are worth cherishing and worth hanging on to.’

Another diplomat said this will become a ‘battle in the coming weeks’.

The US State Department responds

A spokesperon at the US State Department told GSN: ‘In no way is the United States attempting to exclude the protection of transgendered persons, or protection of any person, in any UN resolution.’

They added the Trump administration is ‘against discrimination of any kind and is committed to inclusive, non-discriminatory, and integrated international development’.

‘That commitment is driven by the understanding that discrimination can and does affect a broad and diverse range of people, including LGBTI persons,’ they concluded.

In line with this administration’s policies

Recently, the Justice Department said businesses are allowed to discriminate against transgender employees.

On Monday (22 October), news broke of a leaked memo about the Trump administration seeking to erase trans people. They are trying to do this by limiting the defnition of sex and gender, as seen in the actions at the UN, too.

Trump claimed he’s trying to protect the country.

Immediately after the memo became public knowledge, protests broke out across the country.
