TIME names Trump Person of the Year, but the internet is not having it

Donald Trump is TIME's 90th Person of the Year

Even when he doesn’t actively do anything, Donald Trump is still getting the internet up in arms.

Today (7 December), TIME magazine named the property tycoon and President-elect of the United States their Person of the Year.

Hillary Clinton, once again, came second, followed by The Hacker, Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Crispr-pioneers and Beyoncé.

And the magazine’s decision made everyone scratch their heads in confusion, at least for a minute.

Speaking to NBC’s Today show, Trump said it was a ‘great honour’ and being named the 90th Person of the Year ‘meant a lot’.

TIME based its decision on Trump’s influence on the year’s events, and ‘the scale of his disruption’ and the fact that he ‘presented so many challenges, so many choices about what America values.’

He won, so the magazine says, the election without any experience in holding a public office and stirred a revolution with an ‘assault on truth and logic’.

‘For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it,’ TIME’s Nancy Gibbs explains the choice in the accompanying editorial.

‘For empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year.’

Unsurprisingly, the internet isn’t having it, and the announcement triggered a flood of incredulous, but often very amusing, replies.

Many people pointed out that, over the past 90 years, TIME also awarded the honor to the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Putin, before calling them out for their normalization of Trump’s racism, misogyny and alleged sexual mistreatment of women.

Others said they’d stop their subscription, while Trump supporters saw it as their chance to tell everyone, once again, how much the president cares for minorities.
