Tumblr announces it’s removing all adult content and people are shook

Tumblr launched in 2007 and was bought by Yahoo in 2013

Social media site Tumblr has announced that it will begin to remove all adult and NSFW content from 17 December.

Tumblr recently saw itself removed from the Apple IoS app store after a child porn incident. The site responded by saying that all content is scanned by filters to remove potential child porn. However, some had slipped through the net – leading to the problems with the app store.

However, today’s announcement makes it clear that Tumblr – owned by Yahoo since 2013 – has decided now is the time to overhaul its services.

‘We’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content’

In a lengthy blog posting on the site, CEO Jeff D’Onofrio announced the reasons behind the decision.

‘Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

‘Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr.’

‘Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).’

According to The Verge, content to be banned will include ‘human genitalia, female-presenting nipples, and any media involving sex acts, including illustrations. The exceptions include nude classical statues and political protests that feature nudity.’

‘We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression’

He reiterated the steps the site goes to eliminate all images of minors.

‘Posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content.’

He then went on to outline the new changes in more detail.

‘Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.’

‘No shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content’

He explained why Tumblr was taking the action.

‘It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community.

‘As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets.

‘We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

‘Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.’

Social media reacts

The surprise announcement met with shock, anger and amusement across much of social media. Some predict the site will see a massive downturn in traffic. Others have already announced they are closing their Tumblr pages. Some say they will instead post to Twitter, which continues to allow NSFW content.

#TumblrIsDead, #RIPTumblr and #TumblrIsOver is were among several Tumblr-related hashtags to trend.

Some have pointed out that Tumblr was a place for LGBTI communities to explore and share adult material. Others have said the site made it far too easy for children to view porn.

A large number of people have simply reacted with bemusement.
