TV design guru Nate Berkus tweets out support to fellow Indian Ocean tsunami survivors

For the past 10 years, the day after Christmas has marked a sad anniversary for TV interior design guru Nate Berkus.

It was on 26 December in 2004 that Berkus was vacationing at a beach resort in Sri Lanka with his his partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea, and the Indian Ocean tsunami hit.

Bengoechea was swept out to sea, his body never recovered.

‘My thoughts, prayers, and love go out to all who lost someone in the tsunami 10 years ago today,’ Berkus tweeted today.

Berkus gained fame as a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show then went on to host his own syndicated daytime talk show for two years.

He appeared on Winfrey’s syndicated talk show in January 2005 and gave an emotional interview about the tragedy.

Earlier this year, Berkus married designer Jeremiah Brent and the couple is expecting their first child.

They made a little bit of history in May when they became the first same-sex couple to be married at the New York Public Library. Among the guests was Winfrey.
