Two women recently made headlines when they almost left The Bachelor: Vietnam together — instead of accepting the male suitor’s rose.
About a month ago when the episode aired, contestant Minh Thu was going to leave the show after not receiving a rose from the Bachelor, Nguyen Quoc Trung. Before departing, however, she confessed her love for fellow contestant Truc Nhu.
‘‘I went into this competition to find love, but I’ve found that love for myself. But it isn’t you. It’s someone else,’ Thu said.
Unfortunately, Trung reportedly convinced Nhu to stay off-camera and she returned, ultimately accepting his rose.
Though that seemed the end of the story, it turned out to only be the beginning.
In a recent interview with the show, Thu and Nhu confirmed they’re in a relationship together.
Although the interview is entirely in Vietnamese, their matching yellow dresses and general affection with one another is enough to win us over without knowing all they’re saying.
After Nhu was eliminated from the show, she reconnected with Thu.
They were also spotted out and about holding hands.
Both women told BuzzFeed they had to prepare their families for the episode, as well as their relationship. Neither have been in a same-sex relationship before.
Nhu spoke to her older sister about it: ‘I told her this was completely real and asked her, “Don’t you want me to be happy? If I’m happy in this relationship then you need to support me and not scold me. Going the traditional way and having a husband and child doesn’t necessarily mean that you will find happiness.”‘
Progress in the country
In 2015, Vietnam lifted its ban on same-sex marriage.
Later that same year, they also lifted its ban on gender confirmation surgery and recognized people’s true genders if they had surgery.
More recently, the country’s Ministry of Health also proposed a law giving legal recognition to transgender people.
