On Oscar snub, Tyrese Gibson thinks African-Americans need to take cue from gays

Furious over the lack of racial diversity among this year’s Academy Award nominations, Tyrese Gibson is demanding that Chris Rock boycott the event instead of hosting it.

‘If Ellen DeGeneres or Andy Cohen of Watch What Happens Live was hosting the Oscars and the word got out that if you happen to be gay or homosexual you got blackballed and no nomination because of your sexual preference, they would have stepped down a long time ago,’ Gibson tells TheGrio.com.

He adds: ‘And it would have been fire heat controversy all over the place until the system changed.’

The Oscar nominations when they were announced last week not only snubbed the acclaimed Straight Outta Compton in the best picture category but had all-white nominees in the four acting categories.

Passed over was Michael B. Jordan in Creed although his co-star Sylvester Stallone was nominated and Idris Elba was not nominated for Beasts of No Nation for a performance nominated for Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards.

Also snubbed were the African-American transgender stars of the film Tangerine despite an Oscar campaign and Independent Spirit Award nominations for Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor.

Gibson’s comments followed an Instagram earlier in the week in which he indicated African-Americans need to be galvanized over the issue in much the same way the LGBTI community has been over same-sex marriage and discrimination.

He wrote: ‘Is Chris Rock still gonna host the Oscars after this blatant racism?? Is everyone still gonna show up? In this town I guess it takes homosexuals to be discriminated against in order for someone to finally step up and do something. You have to take your hat off to the homosexual and gay community (be)cause right now they’re as strong as black people use(d) to be when it comes to their rights.’
