UK trans comic held in Canada men’s prison, tweets her entire ordeal

A British trans woman has live-tweeted her ‘humiliating’ ordeal over being held in a Canadian men’s prison.

Avery Edison, a 25-year-old comedian, travelled to Toronto last Monday (10 February) to visit her girlfriend and was held over a visa infraction.

She was taken to Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, Ontario, a provincial detention facility for men.

According to her tweets, she thought a non-refundable return ticket and a copy of her London lease would have been enough to avoid the predicament but admits it was her fault.

Edison was detained for roughly eight hours, according to Toronto Life.

Last night, it was confirmed to CBC News Edison was in good health and was moved to a women’s detention center.

Canadian law states a person is imprisoned depending on his or her genitals. So as Edison has not had gender reassignment surgery, she was placed in a men’s prison.

But she was still able to keep her good humor and let her followers know exactly what was going on.
