Police have cautioned a UKIP councillor after he allegedly slapped a gay campaigner and told him to ‘fuck off’.
David Braniff-Herbert was distributing anti-UKIP leaflets in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, when the incident at around 11am on Saturday (18 April).
He was with campaign group Hope Not Hate at an arts centre when he claims he noticed two people taking pictures of people leaving the building.
These people were councillor Tom Andrews and a colleague.
A video, obtained by Buzzfeed, shows Braniff-Herbert saying: ‘Why are you coming here to intimidate us?’
‘I’m intimidating four guys?’ Andrews responds. ‘Yeah, old age pensioner. Oh fuck off.’
When the gay activist asks him to repeat what he just said, the video then appears to show Andrew’s right hand making contact with the left side of Braniff-Herbert’s face.
‘Now you’re getting me angry now,’ said Andrews.
When the video was posted, it received huge attention on social media.
This included Braniff-Herbert being sent homophobic abuse.
A spokesperson for Norfolk Constabulary said: ‘Police investigating an assault in Great Yarmouth have cautioned a man.
‘Officers were called at around 11.25am this morning (Saturday April 18) to reports that a man had been assaulted at the Drill Hall in Artillery Square.
‘A 72-year-old man from the Caister-On-Sea area was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been released with a caution for a minor assault.’
UKIP has yet to respond to the assault.
