US gym drops member who wouldn’t stop complaints about trans woman in locker room

A Planet Fitness in Michigan has canceled the membership of a woman who complained to gym-goers about a transgender woman she saw in the locker room.

Yvette Cormier, 48, said she was ‘stunned and shocked’ and complained to the front desk and corporate offices on Saturday 28 February.

‘They told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that’s the sex he wants to be,’ she told WNEM.

Cormier spent the next four days telling other members the gym let men in the female locker room.

After she refused to stop complaining, the gym called her and said she had violated its ‘no-judgement policy’ and revoked her membership.

‘Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members,’ the company said in a statement.

‘Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.

‘The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled.’

Carlotta Sklodowska, the transgender woman at the center of the controversy, said she had only entered the female locker room twice, wearing leggings and a baggy T-shirt.

‘I’m not actually a member,’ she told MLive. ‘I was there as a guest of one of my friends.’
