US pundit says gay unions will twist marriage into ‘unholy pretzel’

Former US presidential nominee Mike Huckabee has delivered another speech about the evils of gay rights.

At the annual Southern Baptist Convention meeting this week, the former governor of Arkansas told attendees marriage will be ‘twisted into perversion’ and ‘formed into an unholy pretzel’ as a result of same-sex marriage.

As Right Wing Watch reports, the 57-year-old said: ‘According to recent surveys, the kids who grow up in our evangelical churches do not really know the biblical definition of marriage, and that really does concern me.

‘We need to be clear that, when holy matrimony is formed into an unholy pretzel, twisted into perversion – and when the military and the Boy Scouts become test labs for social experiments – we need to be very clear that, male and female, [God] created them.’

Huckabee also responded to the Republicans who have urged the far-right to dial down their extremist views on abortion and gay rights.

‘Well, I’ve got a news flash for the GOP,’ he said, ‘I play to take my last ride in life on a white horse, not on an elephant and not on a donkey.

‘And I will stick with the Word of God. And if the party, any party, goes a different way, I stick with Jesus. I believe He is forever.’

Huckabee’s comments come the same week he said ‘every fear’ over same-sex marriage has come true.

He said: ‘Every fear that people had has in fact come true, that this is being forced in textbooks on how marriage is depicted, we’re now even seeing television commercials portraying same-sex couples, that’s something I guess I didn’t expect to see anytime soon.’
