Cory Booker has heard the gay rumors before.
And so, when the US Senator from New Jersey was hit with a tweet on Wednesday from someone who thought they had done the math on his sexuality, the staunch LGBTI ally was ready.
As proof, ‘Gary’ cited ‘no wife, no girlfriend, very, very pro LGBT.’
Booker, the first African-American elected to the US Senate since Barack Obama in 2004, replied: ‘Whatever my sexual orientation, know I love you. I hope u are OK with that. May we both elevate more than denigrate.’
The former mayor of Newark, New Jersey, is 47 and never been married.
In 2013, Booker had a unique response to the sexuality issue in an interview with the Washington Post: ‘…People who think I’m gay, some part of me thinks it’s wonderful. Because I want to challenge people on their homophobia.
‘I love seeing on Twitter when someone says I’m gay, and I say, “So what does it matter if I am? So be it. I hope you are not voting for me because you are making the presumption that I’m straight.”’
Booker did say that it is to his ‘great dismay’ that ‘I have not settled down with a life partner.
Whatever my sexual orientation, know I love you. I hope u are OK with that. May we both elevate more than denigrate https://t.co/XK7G254MgX
