Virginia mayor resigns amid meth for group gay sex scandal

Fairfax Mayor Richard "Scott" Silverthorne has been arrested.

The mayor of Fairfax City in Virginia plans to resign today following his arrested for allegedly offering methamphetamine in exchange for group sexual encounters with men.

Richard ‘Scott’ Silverthorne, 50, was among those arrested on 4 August during a sting operation involving undercover detectives.

Police were tipped off that involved with a web site on which it was alleged he was exchanging meth for sex. Police say an undercover detective made a profile on the website that Silverthorne to replied to.

Text messages were exchanged during which Silverthorne allegedly said he could ‘provide meth’ if the detective could provide a hotel room.

Silverthorne was arrested on charges of meth distribution and possession of drug paraphernalia.

His arrest came during a particularly bad period in his life during which he has battled neck cancer, lost his job and his house and filed for federal bankruptcy protection.

Silverthorne was recently elected to a third term as mayor of the city in Northern Virginia. His father, Frederick W. Silverthorne, is also a former mayor who had served nine terms on the city council,according to The Washington Post.
