Wanda Sykes has opened up about her extended family’s relationship with her, her wife and children.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm star married wife Alex in 2008. Together they are parents to two children: Luca Claude and Olivia Lou.
Wanda explains in a new interview that her mother was devastated when she came out in her 40s. So much so, she even wanted her to stay in the closet and didn’t attend her wedding.
However, she says her Christian parents have now come to accept her family – in part because of her aunties and uncles encouraging them to.

‘God loves your family’
‘They really embrace what it is to be a Christian,’ Sykes told The Guardian. ‘My father’s sister, who’s the oldest, she was like: “You know God loves you and God loves your family – don’t you let anybody tell you otherwise.” It’s like, wow, OK, good. This is how it’s supposed to be.’
Wanda furthermore added: ‘We have to have those conversations. The scary part for me right now is that we’re having them with each other instead of crossing over and talking to people who don’t feel the same way [as us]. They’re all talking about how awful we are and we’re all talking about how awful they are.’
Wanda was previously married to Dave Hall from 1991 to 1998.
She won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work as a writer on The Chris Rock Show in 1999.
She has since appeared in supporting roles in recent hit films such as Bad Moms and Snatched.
