An outspoken Australian actress and author gave an impassioned plea for marriage equality today (22 August).
Magda Szubanski, who played Sharon Strzelecki on hit television show Kath & Kim, as well as Mrs Hoggett in Babe, spoke on the Today show.
She said: ‘I barely made it through my childhood and I don’t want that to happen to any of these kids.’
Szubanski continued: ‘There are so many wrongs in this world that are so complicated and can’t be made right, but this is a wrong that could be made right so simply.’
Speaking on the postal plebiscite in Australia, Szubanski believes there’s a double standard in parliament. She asks: ‘They will send our children to war – they will kill our children without consulting us but they won’t protect them.’
The plea continued: ‘You can’t have a nation where a certain percentage are not given equality under the law.
‘In terms of the taxes they want to get from us, it’s absolutely equal. But in terms of our rights, it’s not.
‘We’ll get through this, we’ll survive it’
She continued: ‘We need young LGBTQI people to know to not isolate themselves, to reach out, to find their support. We are there, we’ve got their backs and so have so many straight Australian allies.’
Szubanski talks of her hilarious character, Sharon Strzelecki. She explains she only wanted to entertain Australian audiences and got ‘vilification and disgust’ in return.
