Kesha has released her first solo single in four years, entitled Praying.
The track is our first taster of what we can expect from her next album, Rainbow.
In an letter posted on Lenny that accompanies her new video, Kesha explains: ‘It’s a song about learning to be proud of the person you are even during low moments when you feel alone. It’s also about hoping everyone, even someone who hurt you, can heal.’
The video has a psychedelic feeling, and features her singing makeup-free whilst playing the song on piano.
It starts with a speech: ‘Am I dead? Or is this one of those dreams? Those horrible dreams that seem like they last forever? If I am alive, why?’
Jonas Åkerlund, who has previously worked with the likes of Lady Ga Ga and Madonna, directed the video.
‘If you feel like someone has wronged you, get rid of that hate, because it will just create more negativity,’ she explains in the essay, potentially referencing her well-documented legal battle against Dr Luke over allegations of abuse.
Last year, Kesha released a collaborative single with Zedd titled ‘True Colors‘. Before that, her last album, Warrior, was released in 2012.
