You Will Be Found

On 12 June last year, a gunman opened fired in gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida.

He killed 49 people and wounded 53; it was the deadliest mass shooting – and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBTI people – in US history.

We are just days away from the first anniversary of the Orlando shooting.

Naturally, and rightfully, there will be plenty of tributes across all social media.

Filmmaker Michael Korte is among the first to release his tribute and you’ll better have some tissues ready.

‘We sing for Pulse. We sing for Orlando,’ he said in a statement.

‘We sing for you. We sing as one. We will not be silenced.’

Korte chose a simple tune for his tribute: You Will Be Found, from current hit musical Dear Evan Hansen.

And the lyrics and message are so fitting, especially considering how the LGBTI community came together straight after the attack.

‘Even when the dark comes crashing through, when you need a friend to carry you,’ they sind.

‘When you’re broken on the ground – you will be found.’

The musical tells the story of Evan Hansen, a lonely teenager living with anxiety. His life turns around after a kid at his school kills himself and Evan worms his way into the grieving family by pretending they were best friends.

You Will Be Found marks a turning point in his story, when Evan suddenly feels like he finally has a place where he belongs.

Korte has already mashed up a number of Broadway musicals with famous popstars’ songs – think Lady Gaga meets Rent, or Hamilton meets Beyoncé – in the past.

On Monday there will also be Orlando Love – Remembering Our Angels, a tribute concert dedicated to the victims and survivors of the shooting.
