WATCH: These RuPaul's Drag Race queens share the real price of doing drag

Trixie Mattel, Bob The Drag Queen, Milk, Kim Chi, and Ginger Minj love doing drag of course, but in this video they share the true cost of their art form.

‘It ruins your body, it alienates you,’ says Bob The Drag Queen, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 8. ‘It changes the hours you wake up, the hours you go to sleep.’

‘You have to pay for the fabrics and you have to pay for the rhinestones and the fingernails and like, literally everything,’ Season 7 alum Ginger Minj explains.

‘A lot of people think Drag Race girls in particular, like, they make all this money and they see the world, while that’s true – we have amazing opportunities – 90% of that money goes right back into it.’

‘Every single drag queen says, “you gotta spend money to make money” and I believe that is true now,’ says Season 6’s Milk. ‘I didn’t always think it was true.’

‘You wanna be a pageant girl? That can cost you maybe $2,000 [£1,505.39; €1,691.86] an outfit,’ Bob The Drag Queen says.

‘If you wanna be a Brooklyn garbage pail queen you can do it for about $10 [£7.53; €8.46].’

‘If you’re like a person that doesn’t own anything, and if you’re starting to do drag and want to look put together from head to toe, you’re going to need at least $600 [£451.62; €507.56],’ says Kim Chi from Season 7.

‘Oh my god, drag costs so much,’ exclaims Trixie Mattel of Season 7. ‘There was a day back before Kim and I were on Drag Race, there was a show where she and I combined pocket change to buy a foundation that would match us both for the gig.’

‘I’ve definitely had some personal struggles figuring out the balance between Milk the drag queen and then Dan the boy,’ Milk says. ‘I’ve gone through phases of wanting to sort of be a quote-unquote “normal” cis male walking the streets in like, khakis and a t-shirt.’

‘And then there have been times where I’ve wanted Dan to be like, this out-there crazy dresser.’

‘Drag is a labor of love,’ Bob The Drag Queen states. ‘You do it because you love it, because it does cost you a lot.’
