Watch: Surprise gay marriage proposal at church receives standing ovation

'Your sexuality does not define your right to live a spiritual, Christ-filled life.'

When Trevor Harper and his boyfriend were asked to share their faith story at their Texas church on Sunday (23 August), no one was expecting a marriage proposal – least of all his partner of nine years.

‘God willing, we might even get to walk down the aisle of this church we love so much,’ Harper told the congregation.

‘But… one of the most important things needs to happen before we do,’ he said enigmatically.

Harper then led his speechless boyfriend by the hand to the altar steps and got down on one knee.

The choir and and congregation burst into applause and stood up to congratulate the couple. And the church’s paster even came over to hug the newly engaged couple.

‘We were asked to share our faith story in front of our congregation at First United Methodist Church of Austin,’ Harper wrote on YouTube.

‘This is a church that has welcomed us and changed our lives. All are welcome, no exceptions. As members of this incredible church family we have grown as Christians, individuals, and as a couple.

‘After nine years together, I couldn’t think of a better way to ask him to be my husband.

‘Your sexuality does not define your right to live a spiritual, Christ-filled life.

‘We are instructed to love and it is that simple. We are blessed beyond our wildest imagination.’
