President Trump has referred to transgender former soldier Chelsea Manning as ‘he.’
Chelsea Manning served 7 years in prison after being involved with leaking classified government information to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
Manning came out as trans in 2013 and was unable to transition behind bars. As one of Obama’s last acts as president, he reduced her sentence. Manning was released this past May and is now openly living as a transgender woman.
In this speech, Trump discussed other presidential pardons, which is where Manning was brought up.
‘Criminal leaker. You’ve heard the word “leaker”? President Obama commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning, who leaked countless sensitive and classified documents to WikiLeaks, perhaps and others, but horrible, horrible thing that he did – commuted the sentence and perhaps pardoned,’ Trump said.
This misgendering of Manning comes just about a month after Trump announced he’ll be banning transgender people from serving in the US military ‘in any capacity.’
