John Duran has stepped aside as mayor of West Hollywood after being treated in hospital for blood clots. However, Duran is also facing allegations of sexual harassment by members of LA gay men’s choir.

Duran made the announcement via a post titled ‘HEALTH Update’ on his Facebook page.

‘Thank you all for the flowers, cards, emails, texts, social media posts checking in on me. Blood clots are dangerous and something I have had to contend with for over 20 years.’

‘I am handing the Mayor’s gavel to my friend John D’Amico as the Mayor Pro Tem to fill the remaining two months of my Mayor’s term’ he wrote. ‘I am not resigning from council and will complete this term which expires in November of 2020.

He said he was being cautious about the clots ‘because they cause strokes, heart attacks and have taken a couple of close friends of mine recently.’

Duran, though, faced increasing pressure to resign completely following protests from residents emboldened by the #MeToo movement.

As reported by Gay Star News, Duran stepped down from his chairmanship of the Los Angeles Gay Men’s Chorus in February. He resigned from the long-standing role following allegations of sexual harassment by various members of the choir.

LA choir members allege sexual harassment by Duran

At least three current and former members of the chorus told the Los Angeles Times that they had been harassed by Duran.

Singers Brian Phillip Nichoalds and Jason Tong alleged that Duran groped them. He is also accused of making inappropriate comments.

Tong said he reported the incident to leaders within the Gay Men’s Chorus to no avail. Another singer, Joey Firoben, who sang with the chorus for three years, said he resigned because of sexual harassment, the LA Times reported.

In his Facebook post, Duran said being ill had given him some clarity: ‘Being sick is always a great teaching moment about who loves me and how many dear friends I have. So grateful to be so blessed. SO – I am on the mend. And will be back as feisty as ever very soon.’
