Will the Absolutely Fabulous movie become the next Spice World?

Graham Norton will star in the Absolutely Fabulous movie

The Absolutely Fabulous movie has revealed its cast list, and the cameo list is insane.

With cameos from Joan Collins to Jeremy Paxman, there are going to be over 40 celebrities taking part in the film. It’ll see Edina and Patsy returning after their sitcom days to the high life. They’ll shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London. But when they’re blamed for a major incident, they become entangled in a media storm.

With all the celebrities making appearances, it brings to mind another British film that also had a cast packed with cameos: Spice World.

Camp, crazy and a cult classic, Spice World was panned by critics but has an enduring love among fans. It’s been the subject of a hundred memes. If Ab Fab wants to be successful, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if Jennifer Saunders has taken a cue from the Spice Girls.

This isn’t a read. Ab Fab was amazing in the 90s. But on each comeback, Edina and Patsy’s return has been less and less welcome.

Saunders is a big fan of the Spice Girls, clearly, from the Who Do You Think You Are parody music video to appearing in Spice World herself. But she doesn’t exactly know why people love them either – see the Viva Forever musical.

Spice World worked because it took people that we love dearly and identified with and put them in insane situations. It cranked the pulpiness and sheer lunacy up to a 1000. Remember, this was a film that had aliens, a boat chase and Victoria driving a bus (that was bigger on the inside) over a rising Tower Bridge.

Cameos are normally a waste of people’s time. There is that first instance of seeing someone familiar, and it normally dies a death because you can feel the contract negotiations, the meetings, the favors being pulled. It’s only fun to watch people make fun of their own image if they behave so cartoonish and ridiculous that it’s like they’re on Snatch Game.

Who knows whether the Ab Fab movie will take a few more lessons from Spice World than just the overpopulated cameo list? But, even if it doesn’t, it’s time to bring Edina and Patsy into 2016. And that means taking it away from the sitcom setting. It’s time to go big.
