Will Gillian Anderson play Margaret Thatcher in Netflix’s The Crown?

Makers of the Netflix series The Crown are keen to get bisexual actress, Gillian Anderson, to play former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

Currently in production for season three, The Crown, follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times.

The Crown’s writer, Peter Morgan, is reportedly keen to get Anderson –  who is also his girlfriend – to play the role of the Conservative Thatcher who served as British PM from 1979 to 1990.

It won’t be the first time the pair has worked together. Morgan who also wrote, The Queen, worked with Anderson on the 2006 film, The LAst King of Scotland.

‘Gillian is an excellent actress, so it would be a real coup to get her,’ a source told the Mail.

Anderson, 50, is best known for her roles as FBI agent Dana Scully in the sci-fi series, the X-Files. The American-British actress more recently impressed critics and audiences as an obsessive detective in the crime thriller, The Fall. In that series she plays a bisexual detective and shares some steamy scenes with Archie Panjabi.

She also hit the stage in the Vic’s production of A  Streetcar Named Desire.

Thatcher is not expected to make an appearance on The Crown until late into its fourth season.

The Crown’s third season is being filmed at the moment and stars Olivia Coleman as the Queen, replacing Claire Foy in the titular role. Helena Bonham Carter will take over the role of Princess Margaret. While, Tobias McKenzie will play the Queen’s husband, Prince Phillip, replacing Matt Smith.

Despite the online excitement at the prospect of Anderson playing Thatcher, the actress has not revealed her plans.

The actress’ representatives tole The Telegraph they ‘don’t ever comment on speculative casting’.
