Will Young victim of homophobia on same day as London pride

Gay UK singer Will Young has been the victim of homophobia in London, at the same time the UK capital is celebrating gay pride (28 June).

Young revealed on Twitter today he had been targeted because he is gay.

‘Would you believe on the day of Gay Pride I have been the victim of homophobia. I am SO mad. #pride2014,’ tweeted the singer.

The 35-years-old’s followers were quick to send him messages of support.

Hayz P tweeted: ‘I know it’s hard but don’t let them drag you down, as that’s what they want. They must be sad inside, to want to be homophobic.’

Another Twitter user Andy Hornby said: ‘some people just can’t help themselves… Sad… Pathetic… Rise above it!’

Young went on to tweet: ‘I shower love on the ignorant, hope for the bigots and light into the dark crevices if their unfortunate minds.’

Young came to public attention when he won UK talent show Pop Idol, and came out publicly as gay in 2002 the same year of the competition.

Young’s ordeal is particularly poignant as today London is celebrating LGBTI pride, with the theme of #FreedmTo.

Today in London the streets are filled with an estimated half a million people celebrating LGBTI pride, where famous stars such as Ian McKellen and other revellers braved the British weather to enjoy the day.

So far, Young has not revealed the details of the homophobia or elaborated any further.
