Jennifer Saunders presents Denise Welch with Ally of the Year

Gay, bi and trans women were the stars at the DIVA Magazine Awards last night (23 March).

Celebrating 250 issues of the long-running magazine for women, awards were given out celebrities, politicians and campaigners at the event.

Hosted by L Word star Rachel Shelley, Jennifer Saunders awarded Denise Welch with the Ally of the Year prize.

‘I am chuffed to bits to win this award and to be presented by my comedy heroine Jennifer Saunders was just fantastic,’ she said.

‘I am really honored and was emotional because of the loving and warm response from everyone in the room.’

Jane Hill won Broadcaster of the Year, while X Factor star Saara Aalto won for Musician of the Year.

‘It’s so nice to win something!’ the Finnish singer joked about her ‘runner-up’ status.

‘You all welcomed me with your open hearts. The acceptance and love that I got from X Factor made me realize – that while I want to sing – I want to help people feel accepted. I want to do that for the rest of my life.’

She added: ‘I’ve finally found my home, thank you so much.’
