Zachary Quinto defends Michael co-star James Franco’s obsession with gay topics

Zachary Quinto, who plays James Franco’s ex-boyfriend in the indie flick Michael, is happy to see his co-star exploring gay topics in his films even if Franco is not gay himself.

‘My feeling about James, in particular, is that he’s someone who is really interested in generating a dialogue,’ Quinto tells HuffPost Live. ‘I think it’s certainly an issue in society today that warrants provocative discussion.’

Quinto, one of the few openly gay male movie stars, supports Franco’s desire to explore political, social, spiritual and sexual topics in such gay-themed films as Howl, Milk, Interior. Leather Bar and Michael.

‘People are probably more comfortable not talking about these topics,’ Quinto says. ‘So I feel like putting it out there, and putting it out there in different ways, is something that’s interesting and something that I don’t think people should shy away from.’

Quinto plans to reprise his role as Spock in a third Star Trek film and will appear in a few episodes in the news season of HBO’s Girls.
